Tars Topple Sharks for Number 17 In A Row

WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 28, 2006) ' The Rollins College women's basketball team improved their record to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in the Sunshine State Conference with a 47-23 victory over the visiting Sharks of Nova Southeastern University (11-8, 4-4 SSC). Both teams struggled from the field all afternoon, with the Tars holding the Sharks to 16.4 percent from the field (9-55). Junior forward Larissa McDonough led all scorers with 15 points and freshman guard Jennifer Dyer added 11.

The first half saw both teams have trouble getting the ball into the basket. The Tars went 7-29 (.241 percent) from the field while the Sharks could manage only 4 baskets on 22 attempts. The two teams even went a span of six minutes where neither team could get on the scoreboard. The Tars forced the Sharks into 20 turnovers in the half, while committing 14 turnovers themselves. At the break, Rollins held a 24-10 lead, the second consecutive game where they held their opponents to only 10 points in the first half.

Rollins opened the second half by outscoring the Sharks 6-2 in the first four and a half minutes, with Nova's first basket of the second half coming with 15:41 remaining in the game. McDonough scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half as the Tars opened the lead on the Sharks, going up by as many as 29.

Senior Sally Johnston (Winter Springs, Fla.) continued to star on the defensive side of the ball for the Tars, grabbing six steals to go along with nine rebounds. Dyer (Wake Forest, N.C.) finished the evening with a game high two three-pointers, while McDonough (Ormond Beach, Fla.) led all rebounders with 10.

Rollins out-rebounded the Sharks 51-44 and forced 30 turnovers in the game. The Tars themselves shot only 28 percent from the field (17-61) but were able to keep the Sharks to an even lower percentage on the night to help seal victory number 17 on the season.

Rollins will have only one day off prior to hosting Florida Tech on Monday, January 30 in Winter Park. In their first meeting this season in Melbourne , senior forward Joslyn Giles (Winter Haven, Fla.) scored 22 points to lead the Tars to a 74-54 victory. Game time is set for 5:30
