Women's Tennis Dominates at Varner Invitational

WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 13, 2019) - The Rollins women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend by taking home 1st place in five of six flights at the Varner Invitational on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Rollins.

This year's Varner featured the Tars, as well as four other schools ... Eckerd, Florida Southern, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Eastern Florida State. Doubles play began on Friday, followed by singles on Saturday, and the final matches for both taking place on Sunday. The Tars were able to place in almost every flight.

In Doubles Flight A, Georgina Groth and Lauren Lepore were able to defeat the Palm Beach Atlantic duo of Verina Weindl and Yuliia Russu (8-6) as well as the Florida Southern team of Minnie Kim and Mathilda Vidgren (8-6) to reach the final. In a similar vein, Alex Borg and Ola Durzynski took out Tseveti Trifonova and Julie Martincova from EFSC by a score of 8-4, and then snuck by Florida Southern's  Gabby Hesse and Laura Vetter in a 8-7 (7-2) thriller. In the interest of allowing the away teams to get back home sooner, the final between the two Rollins squads was not played, but will be decided at a future date.

Kaitlynn Groves and Marie Debruyn received a bye in their first round matchup of Doubles Flight B before they defeated Theo Schultz and Cassidy Lear of Eckerd by a score of 8-0. In the final matchup, they faced fellow Tar Natalia Collado Cordon, who had partnered up with Palm Beach Atlantic's Estefani Fennandez. Groves and Debruyn were able to secure first place with a 8-2 victory.

Groves continued her winning ways by sweeping through Singles Flight A. She defeated Kim in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 10-8. She then followed that with a win over fellow Tar Alex Borg 6-4, 6-3. In the flight final on Sunday morning, Groves handled EFSC's Trifonova 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.

Georgina Groth powered through Singles Flight B, winning all six sets that she played. She made quick work of EFSC's Chengeto Moyana, winning the match 6-1, 6-2. In the semi-final, Groth swept Florida Southern's Hesse 6-0, 6-0. Then, in the final match of the flight, she was able to down another Moc, Mathilda Vidgren, by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Valentina Serino was the third Tar to claim a singles flight with her victory in C. Rachel Weaver of Eastern Florida State was her first victim, falling 6-3, 6-2. An injury to her opponent in the semi-final allowed Serino to walk into the bracket final. Once there, she defeated her second EFSC Titan, claiming a 6-0, 6-3 win over Julie Martincova.

The Tars will play in one final tournament before wrapping up their fall season. They will head to Daytona Beach on October 25-27 to play in the Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Bethune Cookman.
