Fritz Engel, a Berlin, Germany native, has been named First Team Academic All-American as a relentless presence in the Tars defense this year, appearing in all 17 games, including making 16 starts. The rangy defender has been a key part of a backline that surrendered just over one goal per game. Engel has also contributed to the attack this year, tallying two goals, and a team leading four assists. He headed home the game winner against Florida Southern, and his four assists are a tie for seventh most in the conference. Fritz has earned spots on both the Athletic Director's and Conference Commissioner's Honor Rolls, he was named First Team All-Sunshine State Conference, to the SSC All-Tournament Team, a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-Region performer, United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-Region, and Second Team All-Region by the D2CCA. Engel will be graduating in May with a degree in Philosophy.
Matt Volk has earned his second Academic All-American accolade, after also being named to the Third Team following his junior season. Volk is the first Tar to earn Academic All-American status twice since Clayton Chesarek in 2002 and 2003. The forward tallied five goals in his senior campaign, third highest total on the team, adding two assists, for a total of 12 points. Volk netted two goals, including the game winner, in the Tars' SSC victory over Nova Southeastern. One of the St. Augustine, Florida native's two assists came on the overtime game-winner against conference foe Eckerd. Volk has been named to the Athletic Director's and Conference Commissioner's Honor Rolls every semester of his college career, and he has been named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District twice. He will graduate in the spring with degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, on the pre-health track.
The Tars' season came to an end in the SSC Tournament Finals against Tampa. Rollins defeated Florida Tech in the first round of the tournament, then handed Palm Beach Atlantic their first loss in the semifinals. Rollins, however, conceded a late penalty in the Finals against the Spartans to fall 2-1.
