LAKELAND, Fla. (February 12, 2018) – Rollins men's golf opened the spring season in a solid eighth place after day one of the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Monday.
The 14th-ranked Tars posted scores of 284-289 to sit three-under for the tournament. Host second-ranked Florida Southern is running way from the field, putting up a 20-under first day with rounds of 280-276. Barry is at 15-under in second place while third-ranked Nova Southeastern (-12) and No. 1 ranked West Florida (-11) are still within striking distance of FSC.
Sam Grindle leads Rollins in a tie for seventh with a five-under score of 139. The junior opened with a career-low round of 66 in the morning. He was bogey free in the first round, highlighted by four birdies on the back and two more on the front. In the afternoon, Grindle carded a one-over 72 with two birdies and three bogeys.
Barry Babbitt is tied for 17th with a two-under 142. He shot an even-par 72 over the first round, going one-over at the turn and getting a birdie on the par-5 second hole before closing the round par-par. Babbitt again dominated No. 2 in the round with an eagle-3 on the hole.
Morgan Egloff is tied for 31st with scores of 73-72 on the day for a one-over 145.
Rollins will finish the Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lone Palm Golf Club on Monday with a final 18 holes. The Tars are playing with Columbus State and Valdosta, teeing off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
